Choosing to stay in a care home

Staying in a care home might be your best option if your care needs aren’t met at home or in supported housing.

An assessment of your care needs is an important step in deciding if you need a care home. There might be other ways of meeting your needs at home, like adaptions and telehealthcare.

If you’re already receiving care at home and your needs have changed, you should let your local council’s social care department know. This means your needs can be re-assessed.

If you have increased care needs for a limited period, you could use respite care instead of entering a care home on a permanent basis.

If all options to help you stay at home have been considered and a care home is still the best option, the next step is to find a suitable care home.
